SUMMARY

Food4Sustainability CoLAB is a Collaborative Laboratory recognised by the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), dedicated to fostering innovation and sustainability across the agri-food system. It serves as a bridge between science, businesses, farmers and public authorities, developing solutions that address the challenges of food production, natural resource management and the transition towards regenerative agriculture.
Its value proposition is based on creating and transferring knowledge to the market through applied research, innovation projects, technological services, training and support for the implementation of sustainable practices. By transforming scientific knowledge into practical and scalable solutions, Food4Sustainability helps strengthen the competitiveness of organisations, enhance the resilience of food systems, and generate economic, social and environmental impact in Portugal and across Europe.

PROBLEM

Food4Sustainability CoLAB addresses the key sustainability challenges facing food systems, including soil degradation, the inefficient use of natural resources, climate change, and the need to strengthen agricultural resilience. Through applied research, innovation, and knowledge transfer, it develops solutions that promote more sustainable and regenerative agricultural practices. Its mission is aligned with the goal of achieving the sustainable management and efficient use of natural resources by 2030, contributing to a more efficient, competitive, and resilient food production system while delivering environmental, economic, and social benefits across the entire agri-food value chain.

SOLUTION

Food4Sustainability CoLAB develops science- and innovation-based solutions to promote more sustainable, resilient, and regenerative food systems. RegeneraLab is Food4Sustainability’s laboratory dedicated to understanding the impact of microbiology on soil health, soil functions, and production systems, serving as a cornerstone of its mission to drive innovation in sustainable food production. Through this laboratory, knowledge is generated to support the adoption of more efficient and regenerative agricultural practices.
Food4Sustainability also operates AmpliAqua®, a research infrastructure dedicated to aquaculture, microalgae production, and bioponics, promoting a more efficient use of water and nutrients. In parallel, through accessible knowledge transfer, capacity building for individuals and organisations, and the development of collaborative projects, Food4Sustainability transforms scientific knowledge into innovative solutions with environmental, social, and economic impact, accelerating the transition towards more sustainable food systems.
