UPTEC in European project to support 13 tourism SMEs in Portugal

The European Commission, through the ST3ER Project, has selected more than 40 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from the tourism, media and creativity sectors. The initiative, promoted in Portugal by UPTEC – Science and Technology Park of the University of Porto, will boost SME projects that promote the digital and green transition in five European countries, most of which are Portuguese.

UPTEC has selected 13 Portuguese companies to receive funding of 25,000 euros each, specialised mentoring, and participation in events, workshops and training.

Among the projects selected are the creation of an interactive chatbot for a winemaking company, a virtual exhibition dedicated to Portuguese string instruments, a Virtual Reality (VR) experience that will connect restaurant customers with the gastronomy, tourism and culture of Portugal, an app that uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to create personalised trails and routes, and a VR experience that will allow you to virtually explore the landscapes of the Azores archipelago.

In addition, ideas such as the creation of a “green roof” with an irrigation monitoring system, a virtual visit using VR to a farm in central Portugal, an online AI solution that turns your cell phone into a tourist guide, a digital platform that will promote sustainable tourism tours in the Porto region, a VR experience for virtual visits to the largest pedestrian bridge in Portugal, a virtual assistant designed specifically for communities in the interior of the country, and the organisation of an international short film festival in Ribatejo using new technologies to increase interactivity with visitors will receive funding.

ST3ER project: sustainable tourism in Europe

ST3ER aims to boost the competitiveness and sustainability of the tourism sector by encouraging the adoption of digital technologies and sustainable environmental practices, as well as fostering cooperation between companies and institutions in the partner countries.

As part of the project, free workshops and webinars are being organized with players from the tourism economy and creative industries. The first online event, entitled “Huddle #1 – How Culture Drives Sustainable Tourism”, will take place on February 11 at 2pm and will feature a panel discussion on the impact of cultural offerings on the tourist experience.
