The CREA architecture studio signed the rehabilitation project for one of Porto’s oldest sports buildings
The rehabilitation of the Estádio Universitário, carried out by CREA, an architecture studio based at UPTEC – Science and Technology Park of U. Porto and a U. Porto spin-off, resulted in the restoration of the stands, changing rooms, and the creation of two new buildings.
Seventy-one years after its inauguration, a “new” Estádio Universitário is presented to the city. The result of an extensive refurbishment designed by CREA, it has given back to the city one of the most iconic sports venues in Invicta.
“The context of this work is critical to us, as is the significance that this space in the heart of Campo Alegre represents for the city and the community, particularly the University of Porto. We naturally feel the responsibility and the challenge that has been entrusted to us,” says André Camelo, founder of CREA.
The work, with a budget of 3.4 million euros, took around five years, but “it was just one stage in what was, is and will surely be a long history of the Estádio Universitário”, added the UPTEC entrepreneur.
“This is, in effect, a new Estádio Universitário, the result of a lengthy process to rescue the management of this space and an ambitious plan to rebirth and refurbish a historic facility that we want to serve the academic community and the city, the citizens of the metropolitan area and their sports associations,” said the Rector of the University of Porto, António de Sousa Pereira.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Luís Montenegro, Prime Minister of Portugal, Rui Moreira, Mayor of Porto, and Ministers Pedro Duarte and Fernando Alexandre.
The second phase of the redevelopment, designed by CREA, included restoring the grandstand building, redesigning the changing rooms, and building two new buildings, including the new CDUP-UP headquarters.
