PROBLEM

Millions of people and businesses still lack access to reliable electricity because extending the power grid is technically difficult or economically unfeasible. Remote communities, emergency response operations, construction sites, scientific expeditions and outdoor events often rely on diesel generators, which are expensive to operate, require complex fuel logistics, and generate significant greenhouse gas emissions, noise and air pollution. Existing renewable alternatives, such as solar panels or conventional wind turbines, are often unsuitable due to installation complexity or the need for permanent infrastructure. As the demand for clean, resilient and portable energy solutions continues to grow, there is an urgent need for a reliable, zero-emission power source that can be rapidly deployed anywhere, operates independently of fuel supply chains and grid connections, and delivers sustainable electricity in locations where conventional energy solutions are impractical or unavailable.

SOLUTION

UPWIND ENERGY has developed a portable Airborne Wind Energy (AWE) generator that harvests the stronger and more consistent winds available at higher altitudes using a tethered autonomous aircraft. The aircraft flies predefined crosswind trajectories to maximise energy generation, transmitting the generated electricity to a compact ground station where it is converted into stable electrical power for local use or battery storage.
Unlike conventional wind turbines, our system requires no tall towers or permanent foundations, making it lightweight, rapidly deployable and easy to transport. Compared with diesel generators, it eliminates fuel consumption, logistics, greenhouse gas emissions, noise and air pollution while significantly reducing operating costs.
The solution enables clean, reliable and affordable electricity wherever grid access is unavailable or impractical, including remote communities, humanitarian missions, scientific expeditions, construction sites and outdoor events. By replacing fossil-fuel-based generation with renewable airborne wind energy, UPWIND ENERGY contributes to decarbonisation, improves energy resilience, reduces environmental impact and expands access to sustainable electricity for underserved users worldwide.
