AlgaBioTec aims to address the issues of the increasing accumulation of macroalgae along the Portuguese coast and the rising pollution caused by the uncontrolled use and unregulated proliferation of fossil-based plastics. To achieve this, AlgaBioTec intends to transform coastal macroalgae into sustainable and valuable resources for society, particularly in the field of agriculture, by creating a biodegradable bioplastic with minimal processing of these macroalgae, whose inherent nutrient content also creates the possibility of being used as a low-cost fertilizer.
