Can you introduce yourself and tell us a bit about your research project/area of work/reason for coming to Porto through OpenInnoTrain (which one applies)
Hello, my name is Mazaher Karimi, and I work as an Associate Professor in electrical power engineering at the School of Technology and Innovations at the University of Vaasa, Finland. I have been continuing my research on the substation automation system and wide-area monitoring protection and control scheme of the power system network, which is supplied by renewable energies, moving forward for green electrification and sustainable energy solutions, particularly in smart grids and digitalization. My interest lies in exploring innovative technologies and strategies to enhance energy systems’ efficiency, reliability, and sustainability, with the ultimate goal of mitigating climate change.
Through OpenInnoTrain, I had the incredible opportunity to come to Porto to further my research and collaborate with experts in the field. The vibrant ecosystem at UPTEC and the supportive environment provided by OpenInnoTrain aligned perfectly with my aspirations to contribute to the advancement of sustainable energy solutions. I am excited about the opportunities that lie ahead and grateful for the support of OpenInnoTrain and the UPTEC community.
Why did you choose to come to UPTEC?
I chose to come to UPTEC because of its reputation as a hub for innovation and technology development, particularly in areas relevant to my research interests, such as smart grids, digitalization, substation automation systems, and green transition. UPTEC offers a vibrant ecosystem that fosters collaboration, provides access to cutting-edge resources and expertise, and facilitates networking opportunities with like-minded individuals and organizations. Additionally, its focus on supporting startups and research projects aligns well with my expectations to contribute to advancing sustainable energy solutions.
What expectations did you have before starting your secondment in Porto?
Before starting my secondment in Porto, I had expected to collaborate closely with experts in my research areas, gaining valuable insights and expanding my networking. Additionally, I was also looking forward to leveraging the resources and facilities available at UPTEC to disseminate some of our research project outcomes and findings, such as the results of the Centralized Intelligent and Resilient Protection Schemes for Future Grids applying 5G (CIRP-5G) and Resilient Digital Sustainable Energy Transition (REDISET) projects. Furthermore, I was hoping to establish connections with peers and professionals in the industry, fostering potential collaborations and partnerships that could enhance the impact of my work.
What expectations did you have before starting your secondment in Porto?

During my secondment in Porto, I found that my expectations were perfectly fulfilled. The atmosphere at UPTEC proved to be vibrant and conducive to research and innovation, offering abundant opportunities for collaboration and networking in the realms of smart grids, digitalization, and green transition. Engaging with experts in these domains, I acquired valuable insights and broadened my network through insightful discussions and idea exchanges. My secondment in Porto surpassed my expectations, affording me a productive and enriching experience that significantly contributed to my professional growth and the advancement of my network.
Which connections to stakeholders in the Porto ecosystem could be made?
During my time in Porto, I had the opportunity to establish connections with various stakeholders in the local ecosystem, particularly in smart grid, digitalization, substation automation systems, and green transition. These connections encompassed:
Academic Institutions: I engaged with researchers and faculty members from universities and research institutes such as INESC TEC and the University of Porto, who are actively involved in relevant areas of power and energy research. Collaborating with these institutions granted me access to expertise, resources, and potential research partnerships.
Startups and Innovation Hubs: I networked with startups and entrepreneurs pioneering innovative solutions in the energy sector. These interactions fostered a culture of entrepreneurship and innovation, offering inspiration and potential partnerships for developing and scaling impactful projects.
The connections made with stakeholders in the Porto ecosystem were pivotal in expanding my professional network, gaining insights into local dynamics, and fostering collaborations that could propel the adoption of sustainable energy solutions in the region and beyond.
What aspects of your secondment in Porto did you especially enjoy?
I had the opportunity to work in a collaborative environment at UPTEC, where I could engage with fellow researchers, industry experts, and entrepreneurs. The exchange of ideas and perspectives fostered a dynamic atmosphere that empowered my creativity and innovation.
Besides, I valued the networking opportunities in Porto, which allowed me to connect with a diverse range of stakeholders in the energy sector. Building relationships with academics and industry professionals not only enriched my professional network but also opened doors for potential collaborations and partnerships in future.
Beyond the professional aspects, I immersed myself in the vibrant culture of Porto. Exploring the city’s historic landmarks and interacting with its friendly residents enriched my overall experience and left me with fond memories of my time in Porto.
How will your project continue after your time here in Porto?
I will maintain ongoing collaboration with the contacts and partners I established during my secondment in Porto. I will leverage the insights and expertise gained in Porto to inform and enrich my ongoing research activities by integrating new perspectives and methodologies into my project. Additionally, I will actively seek funding opportunities and support mechanisms to sustain and expand my project beyond my time in Porto.
