UPTEC startup creates hair removal and shaving device to reduce irritation and disposable waste
A startup incubated at UPTEC – Science and Technology Park of the University of Porto has just launched NATU, a new environmentally friendly and gentler on the skin shaving machine that combines the speed and ease of disposable blades with the benefits of traditional safety razors.
With no disposable waste, the product is manufactured in Portugal and made of solid, rust-resistant aluminium. It has a pivoting head that easily adjusts to the contours of the body, can be used by both men and women, and uses blades made of fully recyclable material.
The idea for the creation of the new brand came about thanks to the experience gained by the team with the launch of their first brand, TATARA Razors, focused on stainless steel razors aimed at the male audience. “With the feedback we have received over the last nine years, we have realised that many users appreciate the ecological philosophy of traditional razors, but find it difficult to adapt or miss the convenience of disposable blades that can be found anywhere and are easy to use on areas such as the underarms, legs or head”, explains João Gomes, one of the creators of NATU.
NATU brings together the knowledge of its founders João Gomes, Luís Oliveira and André Guimarães – all three trained mechanical engineers – in a more accessible razor, available in six different colours. The product, priced at €59, can be easily used with standard blades, which cost around 7 pence each and can be used 3 to 5 times, representing significant savings on blades in the long term.
Funding was secured through the Kickstarter crowdfunding platform, which allows users to directly support the project with an amount of their choice, or by pre-purchasing the product at a lower price. With an initial goal of raising €10,000 in funding, the team exceeded this target and raised around €16,000 from more than 250 supporters.
2026 marks the beginning of the journey for NATU, which is now available for purchase through the brand’s website. Future plans for the product, however, go beyond the online market: “We intend to position NATU in pharmacies, shops and supermarkets with a sustainable component”, reveals João Gomes.
