Sigma Easy Charge secures investment from Mota-Engil

Charging an electric vehicle without using cables will soon be possible with technology from Sigma Easy Charge, a startup incubated at UPTEC – Science and Technology Park of the University of Porto, which has just secured investment from MEXT – Mota Engil Next, the innovation and venture capital arm of the construction and engineering group Mota-Engil.

Founded in 2024 by Adriano Carvalho – professor at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP) –, Augusto Franco, Paula Sousa – both former FEUP students – and Luís Machado, this U.Porto spin-off is developing its own wireless charging technology for electric vehicles, designed to operate at high power and supported by advanced algorithms and intelligent control systems. Luís Machado, CFO of Sigma Easy Charge, acknowledges that ‘MEXT’s investment represents a benchmark recognition and a strong sign of confidence in what we believe to be the future of electric mobility and autonomous systems.’

With this deal, the startup gains the possibility of evolving its technology, currently designed for domestic charging systems, to the context of road infrastructure, with dynamic wireless charging systems installed in the asphalt, as well as its future integration into smart energy networks, where vehicles and roads can also become energy producers.

MEXT explains that the investment in Sigma Easy Charge positions it as an active partner in the evolution of the technological solution: “Sigma combines vision, technical capability and a model with the potential to evolve towards connected infrastructure and smart energy systems, areas that we follow with strategic interest”, says Sílvia Mota, CEO of MEXT.
