Henrique Duarte: “The best technologies rarely make a difference on their own”

At UPTEC, we have our doors open for new ideas, innovation, challenges and secondments. We welcome startups, big companies, universities and hubs from around the world. In this edition of Open Doors, we spoke with Henrique Duarte from Breakawai about Portugal’s innovation culture and the importance of ensuring that technology aligns with companies’ real needs.

What problem does Breakawai solve? Can you tell us a bit about the solution you are developing?

Breakawai helps organisations turn operational complexity into clarity, with measurable results. Many companies have well-established processes and experienced teams, but are not always aware of where they are losing efficiency or how to improve without additional costs.
Our work is based on Process Intelligence, using Process Mining, Task Mining and Data Science to combine data with business knowledge. This allows us to reveal the operational reality and identify inefficiencies and opportunities for improvement. We work across the private sector — including banking, insurance and healthcare — as well as the public sector. We believe there is always room to improve, even with existing resources.

What role does continuous innovation play in the development of your solutions?

Organisations are constantly changing, and processes must evolve at the same pace. At Breakawai, innovation means rethinking how data is used to generate real impact. We test new analytical approaches and develop proprietary tools and algorithms based on recent research, supported by our core technologies.

Why did Breakawai choose Portugal to establish an Innovation Centre?

Portugal offers a highly relevant combination for technology companies: qualified talent and a growing culture of innovation with increasing international relevance. UPTEC adds a collaborative ecosystem that facilitates the development of ideas and projects and allows us to showcase our value proposition to the Portuguese and Iberian markets.

How does the Innovation Centre in Portugal, based at UPTEC, contribute to the company’s global strategy?

Being based in Portugal allows us to develop diverse technical capabilities and approach processes from different cultural and market perspectives. Porto offers the ideal conditions to scale globally without adding organisational complexity.

What factors do you attribute ACE’s success to?

Breakawai’s success stems from a clear focus on real customer problems, a multidisciplinary team, and a continuous improvement mindset. By integrating processes, data, and change into a coherent approach, we help organisations move consistently from insight to execution.
One concrete example of the impact of our value proposition: in 2025, we helped a banking company reduce loan application processing time by 28% by identifying inefficient and redundant tasks and proposing alternatives, addressing limitations in its internal banking systems.

If you had to give one piece of advice to someone starting a business or leading a team, what would it be?

In our day-to-day work, we see that the best technologies rarely make a difference on their own — investing in the latest software without a clear organisational impact can lead to limited results.
For those starting, developing and positioning an idea based on clear evidence and real problems greatly increases the chances of success. Not all organisations are ready for disruptive solutions, so it is essential to focus on precise solutions that are well adapted to customer realities.
